Krabi: Getting there & Things to do

About Krabi

Krabi is one of the most popular tourist destination in the south of Thailand. No wonder, Krabi offers breathtaking islands and beaches, beautiful beach resorts for all kind of travelers, a unique landscape with its many limestone cliffs and a fast connection to the other popular tourist destinations in southern Thailand. Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Phi Phi are all not far away. When speaking of Krabi, most people mean the main tourist resort called Ao Nang. Here are the most accommodations, restaurants and pubs.

How to get to Krabi

There are several ways to get to Krabi. As Krabi has an international airport, you can easily reach Krabi from many domestic and international destinations. The airport is only 20 minutes away from Krabi Town and another 20 minutes from Ao Nang. Many domestic airlines like AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Thai Smile, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai Airways offer a domestic connection to Krabi from several airports all over Thailand.

Another way to get to Krabi is my bus or minivan. There are bus connections to Krabi from almost everywhere in Southern Thailand. Also you can go by bus from Bangkok to Krabi. Most buses or minivans will arrive at the Krabi Bus Terminal a little bit north of Krabi Town. From there you can easily take a Songthaew (taxi) to get to Krabi Town. Of course there are also connections to Ao Nang.

If you are staying on Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, the Koh Yao islands or Phuket, you can also go to Krabi by boat. There are boats going multiple times per day to the Railay and Ao Nang piers.

Things to do in Krabi

1. Visit the amazing islands off Ao Nang

This is probably the number one reason most tourists come to Ao Nang/Krabi. These paradise islands are something you simply just can't miss on your trip. The most visited islands are probably Poda Island (Koh Poda), Chicken Island (Koh Gai) and Tub Island (Koh Tub). Another piece of heaven is Hong Island (Koh Hong), however, it's a little bit more far away than the other islands.

If you want to visit the islands, you don't need to book anything in advance. Just go to the official ticket booth in Ao Nang town, which is located at the main road along Ao Nang Beach and book a ticket for a long-tail boat there.

2. Climb up the Tiger Cave Temple

The Tiger Cave Temple in Krabi (in Thai: Wat Tham Sua) is surely of the most impressive sights this region has to offer. It's located about 3 kilometers from Krabi Town. The view from the mountain is the main reason why most tourists come to the temple. But getting up there is certainly not the easiest thing as you have to climb 1,237 steps to reach the summit. But once on top on the mountain, you will be impressed by this wonderful view. The next challenge will be to go down the stairs again.

3. Beach hopping

Not only Ao Nang Beach with its sunsets is a beautiful spot in Krabi. You also shouldn't miss the other beaches around, such as Railay, Phra Nang Cave Beach or Tonsai Beach. Just take a long-tail boat to get there. Don't miss the Railay viewpoint that offers spectacular views.

Also you can rent a scooter and explore the quiet beaches northwest of Ao Nang. A great spot for a day trip is Klong Muang Beach, which is only a drive of roughly 20 minutes away. Drive safe and don't forget your helmet!

4. Do a day trip to the Phi Phi islands

You don't want to stay on the Phi Phi islands but still also don't want to miss the beauty of Maya Bay and Co.? No Problem! You have the option to just book a one-day trip to the Phi Phi islands. This is great if you don't want to travel around too much or just don't need the hustle and bustle of Koh Phi Phi.

5. Do some rock climbing

This is definitely something for the athletic and adventurous people. There are many beautiful limestone cliffs that are real natural landmarks in the area of Krabi. Also around Krabi Town and Ao Nang there are several places where you can try some rock climbing. Don't miss this adventure if you want to do some thrilling stuff on your trip.

6. Explore Krabi's amazing nature

Krabi is more than just beautiful islands, beaches and limestone cliffs. Only a few visitors know that the Krabi region has so many and especially beautiful springs, streams and natural pools. Don't miss the following places if want to explore the nature of Krabi: Than Bok Khorani National Park, Tha Pom Klong Song Nam or the famous Emerald Pool in the Sra Morakot National Park. Especially if you're tired of beaches, these places are a must!

7. Khao Khanab Nam

Another thing you shouldn't miss when in Krabi is a visit to the Khanab Nam rocks with their ancient stalactite caves inside. The two 60-meter-high rocks can be seen from the waterfront of the Krabi River and especially at sunset this is a very popular panorama. Especially for locals, the large crab statue is a popular photo opportunity that you can visit, too. So even if you don't visit the rocks, you can still enjoy a terrific view at Khao Khanab Nam from Krabi Town.

8. Go to Krabi Town

Most travelers are just passing through in Krabi Town, but it is definitely worth it to spend a day or even more in this lovely town. Not only Khao Khanab Nam and the Tiger Cave Temple are famous landmarks of Krabi Town. For example there is also the beautiful Wat Kaew Korawaram temple that you can visit. Also there are some great night markets and generally as a foodie, there is much to discover in Krabi Town because food is way cheaper than in the touristy places like Ao Nang.

9. Try delicious Thai Food

When in southern Thailand, you should definitely not miss the southern cuisine. There's many delicious foods that you can try, no matter if spicy curries or some delightful sweets. In Ao Nang there are several markets and food stands along the main road. If you don't feel like eating Thai Food, you can still have some Western or Indian food almost everywhere in Ao Nang. For the real Thai food experience visit Krabi Town (see previous point).
